Wisdom for the Ages: Ecclesiastes 9

Chapter 9 of Ecclesiastes would be a very depressing chapter if you don’t understand what Solomon is attempting to do. Solomon writes Ecclesiastes to show that life has very little purpose and meaning if you do not believe in God. If you didn’t know better, you would think that Solomon was an atheists. What he writes in this chapter is that life has very little meaning and you have no control over how life will turn out for you.
Solomon is showing how desperate man is without any understanding of God. As one writer has said “Ecclesiastes does not pretend to teach the gospel. Rather, it encourages the reader to a God -centered worldview rather than falling victim to frustrations and unanswered questions.” Ecclesiastes is one of the most unusual and hard to understand books of the Bible. God used it to show us how foolish and futile it is to live life without an eternal perspective.
